It’s another beautiful day here in northwestern Massachusetts: sunny, warm; yesterday’s low temperature was the usual average high temperature for that date.  It’s  "unseasonably" pleasant.  But seasons change; they will change.  And, not to be too pessimistic about it, I wanted to send out a quote from Confucius, one that might lift the spirits of someone, anyone, who is experiencing some difficulty at this moment:

The Master said: "Only after the seasons turn cold can we truly know the resolve of pine and cypress." (9.28)

It’s in adversity that we find our true selves.

I can’t remember where it is in the book, but my favorite on this theme goes something like, “Hard is that which can withstand grinding.”
I always think of it when I’m teaching a particularly difficult class, one which has a lot of people in it who would like nothing more than for me to just stop taking what I’m teaching seriously.

The problem with Britney is that she is a “constructed” person. She was never allowed to be a true person or live a real life. Everything about her childhood was aimed at creating a super-star.
I really feel for her, because what we are seeing is a reflection upon the entertainment business and our culture. It’s one of those few cases where we have to question how responsible a person like her can be for her own actions…
