In my ongoing work to understand what Confucianism can mean in modern American contexts, I am returning to a paper I wrote for an academic conference a couple of years ago. My thinking on the topic has expanded since then, but I want to build off of this earlier work to produce a new, somewhat more abstract analysis of how systems of ideas move from one historical-cultural context to another (I am tentatively calling this process "philosophical transposition"). In any event, I have never attempted to publish the earlier paper, nor even have I posted it before here. I do that now, below, in the hopes that others will read it and provide me with some useful feedback. Please do send all comments and criticisms. Thanks !
