 The children say: "Grandpa Confucius, we want to study, we want to eat a healthy lunch. We beg you to come back home and teach us…”

This is an element of the critique of Confucius Institutes that has emerged on weibo in China.  It seems some Chinese citizens believe that the money spent on CIs overseas to improve the PRC's soft power would be better spent at home improving the educational prospects of students in poorer school districts.

The critique demonstrates the political problem the Party faces with the Confucian revival.  Although Confucius might be a nice happy face to present to the world, at home any serious consideration of Confucianism, at least the principles embedded in The Analects and Mencius, will quite naturally lead to criticism of the growing inequalities produced by Party-led strategy of high-speed economic growth.  And the Party does not want to encourage that criticism.  It's a Confucius-for-thee-but-not-for-me situation…

Take this line from Mencius 7B14 (Bloom translation):

Mencius said: "The people are of greatest importance, the altars of the soil and grain are next, and the ruler is of least importance."

孟子曰: 民為貴，社稷次之，君為輕

The Party is the ruler of contemporary China, and the Party leadership quite clearly does not want to encoruage the idea that "The Party is of least importance."
