I discovered Google Books Ngram just now, which allows searches of the Google Books data base of volumes going back to 1800. So, I plugged in "Confucianism," "Taoism" (and "Daoism" to capture transliteration changes), and "Legalism" to see which gets discussed more in English language books. And, unsurprisingly, Confucianism wins. Here's the graph (click on image for full size pop up):
Perhaps English language readers are missing something essential about both Chinese philosophy and statecraft by not encountering Legalism more often…. Notice, too, the increase in Confucianism references after 1980, when the turn away from Maoism was getting started…. Not sure what to make of the drop off in Confucianism citations more recently (it doesn't seem to be only an effect of the three year moving average I ran)…
