I made something of a fool of myself Saturday.  Nothing earth-shaking; rather, it was local and relatively small in the larger scheme of things.  But I said something that I regretted and apologized for. I was, simply, ashamed.

And when I think of shame, I think of Mencius (13.7; 7A.7), and he reminds me of what good might come of it:

Mencius said: "Shame is a great thing for people.  Crafty schemers have no use for shame.  And if you aren't ashamed of being inhuman, what will ever make you human?

    It takes a nature capable of empathy to experience shame. Would that there were more of both in the world.
