I noticed this story the other day but was just reminded of it again (thanks to CDT):

A 19-year-old volleyball player from the eastern city of Hangzhou
has become the first black athlete to be called up to represent China,
triggering fierce curiosity among his compatriots.

Ding Hui, who is affectionately nicknamed Xiao Hei, or Little Black,
by his team mates, was included in the national team's new 18-man
training squad.

The son of a South African father and a Chinese
mother, Ding is expected to play a key role in China's push for gold at
the London Olympics in 2012.

The China Daily coverage does not say whether he has PRC citizenship or not.  But even if he doesn't, playing on the national PRC team has certain implications for the racial basis of Chinese-ness.

Developing….

Dinghui

And check this out, his mom is a post office clerk in HangZhou, ZheJiang Province. Can’t imagine the sacrifice she has to make to bring up a bi-racial black looking kid in a single-parent household in China.

    That is super cool.
I have always wondered what happens to the increasing number of bi-racial kids being born in china. I assume that most of them end up in the country of their foreign parent and rarely enroll in Chinese schools for fear of being ridiculed or worse, ignored.

It looks like Ding Hui became a minor celebrity overnight. Quite a few reports filed in the past couple of days. Here is a nice one on his family background.
