The people who are best at continuing the finest traditions of Confucianism in the PRC today are those brave enough to stand up and speak truth to power. People like Chen Guangcheng. We all should learn from such people and ask: why is he jailed and harassed? Why, when he is a paragon of the best Confucian virtues?

Confucius, too, was under-appreciated in his time, and look at the influence he has held on Chinese history. If this man is indeed the paragon of virtue the article makes him out to be, history cannot help but be swayed by him even if it takes a few generations.

We are entering the warring period states period again.
life cycles, societies cycle,
and right now, we can speak up and out to begin reform this time of “chaos” into something which has our style impressed upon it.
Chen Guangcheng is brave to speak out, and many others now are likewise joining the fray as we mix old to new to now.
I am glad you keep this blog active and keep The various traditions alive in the minds of others Sam.
The point I am trying to make is we must mix old to new, must reface Taoism for instance to current times, not to reinvent it, not to re-translate it, but rather place it terms the current culture can (1) accept and (2) connect to.
Chen Guangcheng is not being put in jail for bring up Confucianism values, he is being placed into jail since he is being successful in reconnecting Confucianism to modern terms. Thats what the PRC fears.LikeLike

Guy: it is always wise to put a “if” there, since for many a instance the practice of “hanging the sheep’s head, but selling dog’s meat” has been going on in this business for a while, in many targeted countries.
