A Little Rectification, Please!

      Can we discern a pattern?

        – Wolfowitz screws up and then stays on too long at the World Bank;
       – Gonzales screws up and then stays on too long at Justice;
       – Rumsfeld screws up and then stays on too long at the DoD;      
       – Cheney multiply screws up and then stays on too long at VP;
       – Bush supremely screws up and then stays on too long at POTUS.
    
     It is both awe-inspiring and depressing: incompetence and lack of common decency (doesn’t Wolfowitz see that his churlishness has ruined his own reputation as well as the effectiveness of the Bank?) at historically unprecedented levels.  I never thought I would see things as bad as they were with Nixon, but here we are…

      The words of Confucius come to mind:

The Master said: "Once you’ve rectified yourself, you can serve in government without difficulty.  But if you haven’t rectified yourself, how can you rectify the people?" (13.13)

     Can we get a little rectification here, please!!!

     Oh, and by the way, Bush lost the war.

    The very idea that Wolfowitz would say that he was given “cloudy” ethics advice is a laffer!. He worked for DOD where ethics included “an impropriety or appearance of impropriety” It should have been (and was) immediately apparent that there was a conflict of interest in arranging for his girlfriend’s new position and raise. Resign and show a little class in admitting that your were wrong!

    I’ve seen neo-conservatives on all three levels of government in my country and they all end up making the same mistakes. Ultimately, they are so wedded to a ideological viewpoint that they refuse to listen to any expert opinion that disagrees with it. They can be very successful in the short term because they have no scruples at all when they run for office. But when they get in power they seem bound to make catastrophically bad decisions that result both in the citizenry chasing them from office, and, more moderate elements taking over the party.
    Instead of fulmating against these dorks, I think it is much more fruitful to ask ourselves about what fueled their rise in the first place. My personal believe is that when a paradigm is dying it usually gives rise to one last extremely conservative “gasp”. My hope is that after Bush there will be a very significant “sea change” in American political culture.
