Last month I blogged on Amy Chua's audacious web introduction of her Tiger Mother persona, which I argued is more Legalist than it is "Chinese."  Well, she succeeded in pumping up her book sales, maximizing the profit for her fifteen minutes of fame, and the controversy is receding.  But today I noticed a Chinese Media Project translation of a Chinese story: "Tiger Moms and China's Parenting Gap."  In it, Chinese journalist Zhang Ming argues:

…Americans may find it difficult to understand why the “tiger mom” controversy has blazed across China. Many assume the “tiger mom” child-rearing style portrayed in Chua’s book is the dominant Chinese way. What they may not realize is that in China, especially in the major cities, the “tiger mom” style of discipline and education has faded into the past.

Read the whole thing…as another reminder that "China," like "Confucianism," is not always what it is made out to be.
