And while we’re talking about Taoism, can I just mention this line from yesterday’s NYT Sunday Style section, which is referring to “narcissism:”
A term that has deep roots in psychoanalytic literature appears to have
become a popular descriptor so bloated as to have been rendered
meaningless.
Oh, I see: The most passionate purveyors of narcissism, the NYT style mavens, are complaining that their product has become so popular as to be rendered meaningless. Are they aware of how silly they look? Cue excerpt from Tao Te Ching passage 22:
Give up self-reflection
and you’re soon enlightened.
Give up self-definition
and you’re soon apparent.
Give up self-promotion
and you’re soon proverbial.
Give up self-esteem
and you’re soon perennial.
Simply give up contention
and soon nothing in all beneath heaven contends with you.
That is all.
