I have been rushing around this marvelous city for the past two days.  I have always liked it here, ever since I first visited in 1983.  There something about the energy and design of the place that draws me in.  No big deep thoughts here – I am too tired.  Blogging on ancient Chinese thought will continue when I get home next week.  For now just some pictures.  Oh, and a thank you to Roland for lunch and conversation today:

Nice pictures, Sam! I’ll be teaching at Tsinghua in the spring of 2009, and we (family and I) are trying to figure out a few “long” haul trips to take while there. Hong Kong is definitely on the list, though there’s so many places possible to go to that it’s hard to decide.
    Have a great trip!

    Chris,
Wow, Qinghua! You’ll have to look up my friend, Daniel Bell. A wonderful guy. How did you get that gig?
If you are making plans for traveling in China, you must go to Dunhuang. Everyone goes to Xian, and I guess it is all but required. But Dunhuang is better – better art by far and, certainly, better better intentions (i.e. Buddhist devotion v. militarist obsessions.). The Qin soldiers are older, but Dunhuang is more beautiful….

    Sam,
My university just opened up an exchange (faculty and student) with Tsinghua, and the administration invited me to be the first faculty member they sent there in residence. They know about my research in Confucianism, and conjunction with the fact that I’ve received a few teaching awards here I guess made me the logical choice to be the first ‘ambassador.’
It’s quite an honor, and a hell of a deal too (everything considered). Needless to say, we (me and the family) are very psyched to go!
I’d be ‘housed’ in the philosophy department, so no doubt I’d meet Bell. When the time gets closer, maybe you can virtually ‘introduce’ us?

As a botanist, I’m fascinated by the Hong Kong and Taiwan floras. Taiwan’s high mountains put it in a class by itself, but Hong Kong has lots of species similar to what you’d find in the southeastern United States and some wonderful strictly-Asian plants like the fan palm Livistona chinensis, which grows quite happily in Florida–a neighbor across the street has one.
