I have been posting more on baseball these days – it just happens that way. But I beg the indulgence of readers not interested in the game for yet another post today.
For me, he was important as the voice of the Yankees, on both television and radio, for many years. I was not terribly interested in baseball as a kid. My father was not deeply into the sport (more of a football guy) and it was not on around the house much. It was when I went to college in 1975 that I fell in with a group of loyal Yankee fans, and I became one myself. On many a night, the voice of Rizzuto would surround us as we followed each pitch and catch and run. "Holy Cow"! was his exclamation for a home run or a great play, and we all said it along with him. The late seventies was a great time for the Yankees, and a great time to become a Yankee fan. And Rizzuto was the master of ceremonies.
Farewell Scooter.
