In an op-ed in today’s NYT, Robert Pape notes:

ISRAEL has finally conceded that air power alone will not defeat
Hezbollah. Over the coming weeks, it will learn that ground power won’t
work either. The problem is not that the Israelis have insufficient
military might, but that they misunderstand the nature of the enemy.

He does not make the obvious connection to Sun Tzu, so let me:

Therefore I say: ‘Know the enemy and know yourself; in a hundred battles you will never be in peril.

When you are ignorant of the enemy but know yourself, your chances of winning and losing are equal.

If ignorant of both your enemy and of yourself, you are certain in every battle to be in peril.
(chapter 3, lines 31-33).

It seems clear that Israel has misunderstood Hezbollah.  The next question, then, is: do they really know themselves?

    Nice.
Thing about wars today, in comparison to Sun Tzu’s time, is that every war nowadays has three sides – the two at war and the international side (UN/Media/superpowers etc.).
The thing that’s clear, in my view, is that Israel fails to address the third international party, or at least – they fail to explain their side of the conflict. You may know yourself and even know your enemy, but failing to understand the international politics is what will fail you. The US had it bad with Afganistan and Iraq and now Israel is doing the same mistake.
The world still doesn’t know how to “understand” or “deal” with terrorism… 😦
