Continuing with the theme of fading Confucianism, here is a short piece from Shanghai Daily, via CDT (emphasis added):
FEWER people in Beijing and Shanghai are willing to live a "double
income no kid" lifestyle after marriage, 3 percentage points less than
three years ago, and the reasons couples’ are having children has also
changed, Beijing Morning Post reported today.According to a study in 2002 by the Horizon group, a Beijing-based
research consulting firm, a ratio of 4.5 percent of young married
couples in cities and rural areas chose to not have children, even
after several years of marriage. Many couples decided to have a child to continue their ancestral
line or to obey their parent’s traditional wishes. Only 17.8 percent of
couples wanted to have a child to bring enjoyment and fulfillment into
their lives in 2002.With this figure rising to 30.4 percent last year, the number of
couples holding this concept increased. Remarks like "we love children"
and "a baby is the crystallization of our love," represent the main
reasons why couples have a child, rather than "my parents want
grandchildren."
"Modern people are concerned more with their own happiness along
with their parent’s happiness, and they believe a baby will bring them
joy and their family closer together," explained family relation
experts.
