I am at the beach and will not attempt to read and react to this week’s "Modern Love" column.  Be back next week.  But here is a passage from Confucius to think about:

When Yen Hui and Adept Lu were attending him, the Master said: "Why don’t you tell me what your greatest ambition is?"
"I’d like to share horses and carriages, robes and light furs with friends," said Lu, "to see them well-used, and then rest content."
"I’d like to promote my virtues," said Yen Hui, "and never be a burden to others."
Adept Lu then said: "Now Master, we’d like to hear your greatest ambition."
"To comfort the old, to trust my friends, and to cherish the young."
